02 Apr Cisco Unified Communication solution implemented in ABB Romania
ABB Romania, a leading Romanian company in the power and automation domain and member of ABB Group, introduced a Cisco Unified Communication solution to streamline work processes and reduce costs. The project also involved upgrading the IT network and interconnection of two company sites. The solution was designed and implemented by CRESCENDO, as a Cisco Silver Partner.
The project answers to two ABB key requirements. First, it aims to provide a unified communication solution with voice services based on IP to those employees located in various sites. These employees have large communication needs and they also need an external personal number. And second, it aims to provide wireless access in ABB sites including an employees’ area and a visitors’ area, with differential access to network resources (full access for employees and limited access for visitors). The company also wanted a high technology system to enable protection of investment for at least five years, to be flexible, scalable, and easily adaptable to future needs.
The system adopted by ABB is an integrated solution of IP based voice communications, which involved reconfiguring the IT network, design and also implementing of a new IP telephony system, a voice messaging solution and a new wireless component.
The project implied designing and implementing of a Cisco Unified Communication system with individual voicemail and an IVR (Interactive Voice Response) system. IVR facility was configured so that customers can be served at any time, even after closing hours, without human intervention, even before the call reaches the reception operator. Pre-recorded messages, customized in accordance with the moment of the day or of the year can be added.
The solution has been operational since April 2009. It was designed and implemented by CRESCENDO, as a Cisco Silver Certified Partner in Romania, in less than a month, thus avoiding any loss of productivity. The system designed by CRESCENDO for ABB Romania allows further integration with the company’s regional operations, such as the Bulgarian site, which has already been using Cisco Unified Communication solutions.
- The solution allows ABB Romania to reduce communication costs, with estimated savings associated of up to 40%.
- Technically, one of the specific requirements was to configure Survivable Remote Site Telephony (SRST) for a particular group of ABB employees. This feature configured on a voice gateway allows using IP telephones even when the system loses IP connectivity from Internet service provider, while offering voice messaging system availability called Cisco Unity Express.
- To simplify voice mail access, IP phones were configured so that with one single key the user can access a log-in page directly from the IP phone screen. After log-in, users can manage their voicemail inbox, being able to use a lot of facilities.
- Cisco Unified IP phones were configured with an energy saving function: when they are used, they remain on standby until the user initiates the interaction. Thus, the energy consumption can be reduced by 50-60% for a phone.
“Cisco collaboration solutions allow a new way of working based on mobility, flexibility and collaboration between employees. Implementation at ABB Romania proves again the value of our integrated unified communication solutions,” Interim General Manager at Cisco Romania Cristian Popescu says.
“As the communications needs in ABB Romania grew significantly, investing in a solution which could ensure a continuous information flow between our headquarter and the other locations became compulsory,” IS Manager with ABB Romania Calin Ardelean says. “The new chosen solution offered us two major benefits: increased productivity and costs reduction, as well as an implementation period of maximum 30 days.”
“Our team provided engineering design and implementation of the Cisco Unified Solution. The competences acquired by our specialists throughout a longstanding experience in implementing communication solutions and Cisco’s high quality products helped us in meeting our customer’s needs in the estimated time frame. Now, Cisco Unified Communication enable ABB to increase productivity and sustain a competitive advantage,” Communications Business Unit Manager with CRESCENDO Costel Chirita says.
