European money invested for research! University of Pitesti success story

The IT & C Infrastructure Restoration project, co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund, increases the performance of the scientific research activity of the University of Pitesti.

Bucharest, 18 November 2010 – The University of Pitesti, together with CRESCENDO, the IT & C solution house announces the completion of the IT & C infrastructure upgrade project, dedicated to the Development and Innovation Research activities. The project, entitled “Increasing the administrative capacity for CD & I through ICT solutions at the University of Pitesti”, had an important technical component, consisting of endowments with IT equipments and services worth 81,000 Euros. The investment was provided by the European Regional Development Fund – the Sector Operational Program “Increasing Economic Competitiveness” and is part of the Pitesti University effort to increase the performance of scientific research at European standards.

The scientific research at the University of Pitesti, an accredited state higher education institution and a member of the Association of European Universities, takes place within 8 research centers, certified by CNCSIS, through which more than 100 scientific research contracts have been rolled out earning for the institution more than 25 million Ron.

“In recent years, the degree of complexity and number of research projects has increased by over 50%. In order to increase the efficiency and profitability of these projects, as well as to facilitate the work of the research teams in running current projects and in the preparation of new applications, we needed dedicated project management solutions and collaboration platforms. At the same time, it was necessary a structural and functional separation of the IT & C services related to the Development & Innovation Research activity in relation to the other information components of the institution. in the absence of own funds, obtaining the European funds needed for development has become a priority for us.” Silviu Ionita, Dean of the Faculty of Electronics, Communications and Computers from Pitesti University and project director.

Following the submission of the grant application, the University of Pitesti obtained in June 2010 the European funds needed to restore the IT & C infrastructure. The realization of the project was offered and won by public auction of CRESCENDO, which, through its specialized integrator competencies, designed and implemented an integrated IT & C system based on the technology of three world-famous suppliers: Hewlett Packard, Microsoft and VMWare.

“The University of Pitesti now benefits from a modern and integrated IT & C infrastructure, based on HP equipment, VMWare virtualization technology and Microsoft’s software infrastructure. In addition, our team has implemented Microsoft Project Server – a dedicated project management solution and Microsoft Sharepoint collaboration portal. The system thus integrated brings benefits both by increasing performance on the line of scientific research as well as in the area of security and administration of the IT & C infrastructure.” Cristian Mierlea, Business Unit Manager CRESCENDO.

Following implementation, the research team has the ability to manage projects more efficiently and easily, from the idea stage to completion. It can track allocated budgets, cost of resources, effort versus estimated effort. Additionally, collaborating on projects is made easy, team members have shared access to all the information they need. At the same time, this project supports the intensification of international collaboration through the research team’s ability to provide services at the level of European research centers.

In addition, the new work environment ensures increased security, reduces administration effort, and helps improve user experience. By using a high-end server system and virtualization technology, the University of Pitesti benefits from a performant cost-effective cost-benefit ratio and minimizes the costs of running and maintaining the IT system.

In the future, through the development of the internal portal solution and project management system, the IT & C system will also allow for conclusive analysis through query, search, replication, synchronization or automated reporting or on-demand reporting functions.
